per EACH (USD)It will not connect to your factory hanger wiring. To install it you must also add:
- An IPH-3W intermediate pump harness in the length your vehicle needs
- A BCA-4W bulkhead connector assembly
- An in-tank harness that matches your pump’s connector
- An RCS input connector set if your chassis plug is not 6-0-X keyed
The easiest path is a complete kit: FPWK-029W for GSS-style pumps or FPWK-029D for Walbro DCSS pumps.
GM Pump-on-a-Stick Fuel Pump Wiring Harness HD
Universal hotwire harness for older GM metal fuel pump hangers with a 3-position Weather-Pack connector.
One harness, many GM platforms
For years GM used the same metal “pump on a stick” fuel pump hanger design, with a 3-position Weather-Pack connector, across a wide range of cars, trucks and SUVs. Because the electrical interface is shared, this one harness covers most of them. What changes from vehicle to vehicle is the keying of the chassis plug, the distance from the relay to the hanger, and the pump in the tank. Those are handled by the parts you pair with the harness.
The harness moves the entire pump load off the factory circuit. Power comes straight from the alternator output, where running voltage is typically 1–2 volts higher than at the battery, through a fuse holder mounted at the alternator and a heavy-duty weatherproof relay. The factory pump wire becomes a relay trigger only.
What you need to complete the installation
| Part | What it does | Options |
|---|---|---|
| This harness | Relay, alternator-fused 10 AWG power feed and 10 AWG ground | — |
| IPH-3W intermediate harness | Connects the harness’s Metri-Pack 280 output to the top of the hanger | IPH-3W12 (12"), IPH-3W18 (18"), IPH-3W36 (36"), IPH-3W48 (48") |
| BCA-4W bulkhead connector | Replaces the factory pass-through on the hanger; common to every installation | One size |
| In-tank harness | Runs from the bulkhead to the pump terminals in Teflon/Tefzel insulated copper wire | ITWH-042 for GSS-style 2-pin pumps ITWH-043 for Walbro DCSS pumps |
| Input connector set (if needed) | Changes the harness input to match your chassis plug keying | RCS-089 (3-position 0-X-0) RCS-010 (2-position) |
| 199-T-3 removal tool | Releases the Weather-Pack terminals so they can be moved into a new housing | Required for any connector swap |
Choosing the IPH length
The IPH bridges the gap between the relay, which mounts on the frame, and the connector on top of the fuel pump hanger. That distance differs by vehicle, which is why the IPH comes in four lengths. Measure from your relay mounting point to the hanger and choose the shortest IPH that reaches without strain.

3-POS 6-0-X
(Standard Harness)
3-POS 0-X-0
(RCS-089 / HP10000)
2-POS 3-0 Pattern
(1985-1991 S10)
| Cavity | 3-POS Function | 2-POS Function | Wire Color |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | Ground | Relay Trigger | Black (3P) / Gray (2P) |
| B | Level Sensor | Level Sensor | Violet |
| C | Relay Trigger | N/A | Gray |
Look at the mating face of the connector with the latch pointing up. Each cavity’s key is named by its clock position: 0 for 12 o’clock, 3 for 3 o’clock, 6 for 6 o’clock, 9 for 9 o’clock, and X for no key slot. Use the RCS-089 for 0-X-0 keying or the RCS-010 for the 2-position plug, with the 199-T-3 tool to move the terminals.
How the harness grounds the pump
The harness has a complete ground system of its own. It does not depend on a ground from your factory chassis harness.
- A combined ground runs from a spiked ring terminal mounted beside the relay, through 10 AWG wire, the full length of the harness and IPH.
- At the hanger it ends in a ring terminal on a 1/4" brass stud on the hanger hat, which carries the pump’s high-current ground.
- Inside the IPH, a 14 AWG ground is bonded to that 10 AWG wire and branches through the BCA-4W bulkhead. In these hangers the fuel level sensor ground is common with the pump ground, so this branch serves the sensor.
What passes through the BCA-4W bulkhead
| Circuit | Wire size |
|---|---|
| Pump positive (two terminals in parallel) | 14 AWG each |
| Low-current ground | 14 AWG |
| Fuel level sensor signal (violet) | 18 AWG |
Splitting the pump feed across two terminals doubles the bulkhead’s current capacity, and moving the heavy ground to the brass stud frees those terminals for power.

Frequently asked questions
Can I plug this harness into my factory hanger?
No. The harness output is a Metri-Pack 280 connector that only mates with an IPH-3W intermediate harness, and the factory bulkhead and in-tank wiring cannot carry the current. You need the IPH, BCA-4W and an in-tank harness, or one of the FPWK-029 kits.
Should I buy the harness on its own or one of the kits?
For most installations, buy a kit. The FPWK-029W (GSS-style pumps) and FPWK-029D (Walbro DCSS pumps) include this harness with everything needed to install it. Buy the harness separately only if your vehicle needs a different combination, such as a shorter IPH, or you are replacing the harness in an existing installation.
My chassis plug won’t mate with the harness. What do I need?
Your plug uses a different key pattern. Read the keying as described above, then order the RCS-089 (0-X-0) or RCS-010 (2-position) connector set and the 199-T-3 tool to move the terminals into the new housing.
Do I have to drill the hanger for the brass stud?
Yes. The high-current pump ground needs a dedicated path that the bulkhead terminals cannot provide, so a 1/4" brass stud is installed through the hanger hat.
Will this work with a plastic fuel pump module?
No. It is designed only for GM/Delphi metal “pump on a stick” hangers. Plastic modules use different bulkhead connectors.
