Stainless Braided Rubber Hose, -6 AN

11/32" inside diameter, 9/16" outside diameter. 1000 psi operating, 6000 psi burst.

The Racetronix RBSH-6 is -6 AN braided rubber hose: CPE synthetic rubber liner, embedded nylon inner braid for strength, and double-braided stainless steel outer shield for abrasion and corrosion resistance.

It takes Racetronix reusable and crimp rubber hose ends, and other standard-bore rubber hose fittings made for standard AN inside and outside diameters. The charts near the bottom of this page list every Racetronix hose end that fits -6 hose. The same size is also available as RBNH-6 nylon covered (RBNH).

Key features

  • -6 AN: 11/32" (8.7 mm) inside, 9/16" (14.2 mm) outside diameter.
  • 1000 psi operating pressure, 6000 psi burst.
  • CPE synthetic rubber liner.
  • Embedded nylon inner braid for strength.
  • Double-braided stainless steel outer shield for abrasion and corrosion resistance.
  • Temperature range -40°C to 150°C.
Rubber hose and fuel

Many hose suppliers recommend rubber hose for fuel because the hose ends are easier to put on and the hose costs less. We don't, and that goes for every brand of CPE-lined rubber hose, ours included: it is the nature of the material, not the maker.

CPE liners deteriorate over time with the solvents and ethanol in today's fuels. Some race fuels oxygenated with MTBE (methyl tertiary butyl ether), or carrying other additives, can make the liner swell and narrow the bore like a clogged artery, or turn it soft and jelly-like. Pieces can then break off and plug injector filter baskets, fuel filters and the filter sock on the fuel pump.

Rubber hose is also permeable: fuel vapour escapes through it, which is why you smell fuel around a parked vehicle, and standard rubber and CPE hose is not CARB compliant. That is a large part of why carmakers moved away from rubber fuel hose in the late 1990s and early 2000s. CARB-compliant low-permeation hoses do exist, but they use specialized liners such as FKM (Viton) and usually cost more per foot than PTFE.

PTFE is a different material altogether: it resists these fuels and additives and is essentially impermeable to fuel and most solvents. (We do not sell it as CARB certified: certification applies to a tested, finished hose assembly, and ours are assembled by the customer.) For fuel lines, use our conductive-lined PTFE hose with PTFE hose ends. Rubber hose is a good choice for oil, coolant, vacuum and boost lines.

Making a hose assembly

Wrap the cut mark in masking tape and cut the hose square with a thin cutting disc or fine-tooth saw. Push the hose into the hose end nut with a twisting motion until it bottoms, put a little grease on the fitting nipple (we use silicone grease; wheel bearing grease also works), then thread the fitting head into the nut with an aluminum AN wrench. Full steps are on each hose end page.

Cross-reference: equivalent part numbers

The RBSH-6 replaces or compares with these parts from other brands. "Similar" means a close match that differs in a detail such as liner material, braid construction or outside diameter. Other brands often sell braided hose in pre-cut lengths or rolls; where the length is coded into the part number, the lengths are listed. Reusable hose end sockets are sized to the hose outside diameter, so if you mix brands of hose and hose ends, check the outside diameter against the hose end maker’s chart.

About this cross-reference. We compiled these equivalent part numbers from the manufacturers’ published catalogs and websites, and we update them when we can. We have not fitted or tested other brands’ parts with ours. Please check the hose size, bore and end type against your application before you order, or email [email protected] and we’ll help. Final fitment is the buyer’s responsibility. Brand names and part numbers belong to their owners and are used for reference only; Racetronix is not affiliated with these companies.

Frequently asked questions

Is it E85 compatible?

Yes. CPE is rated for E85, and that is what every supplier will tell you. The real question is for how long: ethanol and the solvents in today's fuels wear down any CPE liner over time. For an E85 fuel system, use PTFE hose.

Can I use it for fuel?

We do not recommend any brand of rubber hose for fuel. CPE liners deteriorate over time with ethanol and solvents, some race fuels with MTBE and other additives can make them swell or turn jelly-like and shed pieces into filters and injectors, and rubber hose lets fuel vapour through (it is not CARB compliant). For fuel lines, use our conductive PTFE hose, which is essentially impermeable to fuel, with PTFE hose ends.

Which hose ends fit it?

Racetronix reusable and crimp rubber hose ends for -6 hose (see the charts above) and other standard-bore rubber hose ends. Compare bore and outside diameter if you use another brand.

Can I use PTFE hose ends or push-lock fittings?

No. PTFE hose ends need PTFE hose, and push-lock fittings need push-lock hose.

How do I cut it?

Wrap the cut in masking tape and cut square with a thin cutting disc or fine-tooth saw, then trim any loose braid.
