Fuel Pump Wiring Kit, F98 HD, DCSS
1998 Camaro & Firebird LS1 HD Fuel Pump Wiring Kit — DCSS
Battery-to-Pump Wiring for Metri-Pack 280-Connector Pumps (Hellcat, Walbro 525 / 450) — Pump Not Included
Item #: FPWK-028D
Fits 1998 only. Camaro, Firebird and Trans Am with the LS1 engine and the factory metal tank / swing-arm open hanger. Not interchangeable with 1999–2002 fuel systems.
Wiring only — no pump. This kit wires a pump you already have. It is built for high-current pumps that use the Metri-Pack 280 pump connector (see Pump Compatibility).
Product Overview
The factory fuel pump feed on the 1998 LS1 F-body was never sized for a high-output pump — and it is nowhere near what a Hellcat- or 525-class pump draws. Run one of these pumps on the factory circuit and you lose voltage at the motor, which costs you flow and pressure right when boost is highest.
This is the complete wiring path, battery to pump, for high-current pumps that use the Metri-Pack 280 connector: a fused, relayed 10 AWG power feed, a sealed bulkhead pass-through, and a Metri-Pack 280 in-tank harness.
It also keeps the fuel-level sender reference ground fully isolated end to end, so a pump upgrade doesn't reintroduce the shared-ground gauge error these cars are prone to.
Kit Contents
| Qty | Component | Description |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | FPWH-028 | Chassis fuel pump wiring harness — sealed weatherproof relay and fused 10 AWG power feed, battery to bulkhead. |
| 1 | IPH-002HD | Intermediate pump harness, 36" — four-conductor with a dedicated, isolated fuel-level sender reference ground. Includes the brass ground-stud mounting hardware (screw, nuts, washers). |
| 1 | BCA-4W | Bulkhead connector assembly, plus two violet sender flying leads with inline 150-series connector bodies and a terminal pick tool for transferring your factory sender terminals. |
| 1 | ITWH-059 | In-tank harness with the Metri-Pack 280 pump connector for high-current pumps. |
Kits are bagged from individually stocked components. The sender connector bodies are supplied loose with the pick tool so you can transfer your factory sender terminals without opening the sealed bulkhead connector.
Pump Compatibility
This is the D wiring kit, built for pumps that use the Metri-Pack 280 pump connector, including:
- Hellcat fuel pump
- Walbro 525 L/hr (F90000285)
- Walbro 450 L/hr (F90000274)
Running a Racetronix RXP or a Walbro 255/350 pump with the Tyco/Sumitomo connector instead? Use the FPWK-028W kit.
Not for brushless pumps. Brushless pumps require a dedicated three-phase controller and sensor wiring (four conductors just for the pump) and are not compatible with this harness.
Engineering Specifications
- 10 AWG copper on the full power and ground path, battery to pump.
- 630-series sealed fuse holder with an ATC blade fuse — match the fuse to your pump: 25 A for the Walbro 450, 30 A for the 525 / Hellcat class.
- Sealed weatherproof relay with a PCM-safe pull-to-ground trigger.
- Isolated sender reference ground — the fuel-level circuit never shares a return with pump ground, so the gauge stays accurate.
- No solder joints — ultrasonically welded splices and sealed connectors throughout for underhood and in-tank durability.
Installation Notes
The in-tank harness plugs onto your pump's Metri-Pack 280 connector. If your pump arrived with its own in-tank pigtail, set that aside and use the supplied harness in its place so the sender ground stays isolated.
You transfer the two factory fuel-level sender terminals into the supplied inline connector bodies — no crimping and no need to open the sealed bulkhead connector. The sender is a two-wire variable resistor with no polarity, so either supplied lead can go to either sender wire.
Pump ground bonds at the brass through-hat stud on its own dedicated conductor; the stud mounting hardware is supplied. Tank removal, hanger service, fuel-pressure relief and the pump prime cycle are vehicle-service steps — follow the factory service manual or a Chilton/Haynes guide for your car.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this include a fuel pump?
No. This is a wiring kit for a high-current pump you already have.
Does this fit a 1999 or newer F-body?
No. It's specific to the 1998 model-year bulkhead and hanger.
Is this the right kit for my pump?
Use this D kit if your pump has the Metri-Pack 280 connector (Hellcat, Walbro 525, Walbro 450). If it has the Tyco/Sumitomo connector (RXP, Walbro 255/350), use the FPWK-028W.
Will this work with a brushless pump?
No. Brushless pumps need a three-phase controller and sensor wiring — four conductors just for the pump. This harness is for standard brushed pumps only.
What fuse should I run?
Match it to your pump — 25 A for the Walbro 450, 30 A for the 525 / Hellcat class. Use an ATC blade fuse in the supplied holder.
