Fuel Pump Wiring Kit, F98 HD
1998 Camaro & Firebird LS1 HD Fuel Pump Wiring Kit
Complete Battery-to-Pump Wiring for Tyco/Sumitomo-Connector Pumps — Pump Not Included
Item #: FPWK-028W
Fits 1998 only. Camaro, Firebird and Trans Am with the LS1 engine and the factory metal tank / swing-arm open hanger. Not interchangeable with 1999–2002 fuel systems.
Wiring only — no pump. This kit wires a pump you already have. It is built for pumps with the OE-style Tyco/Sumitomo connector (see Pump Compatibility). Want the pump included too? See RFPK-028.
Product Overview
The factory fuel pump feed on the 1998 LS1 F-body was never sized for a high-output pump. Push more current through that undersized wiring and you lose voltage at the pump — and voltage lost at the motor is flow and pressure lost at the rail, right when the engine needs it most.
This kit is the complete wiring fix, battery to pump, for the pump you're already running: a fused, relayed 10 AWG power path, a sealed bulkhead pass-through, and an in-tank harness that plugs straight onto a Tyco/Sumitomo-connector pump.
It also protects your fuel gauge. The fuel-level sender reference ground is kept fully isolated end to end — sharing that return with pump ground is what corrupts the gauge reading on these cars, and this kit keeps them separate the way the factory intended.
Kit Contents
| Qty | Component | Description |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | FPWH-028 | Chassis fuel pump wiring harness — sealed weatherproof relay and fused 10 AWG power feed, battery to bulkhead. |
| 1 | IPH-002HD | Intermediate pump harness, 36" — four-conductor with a dedicated, isolated fuel-level sender reference ground. Includes the brass ground-stud mounting hardware (screw, nuts, washers). |
| 1 | BCA-4W | Bulkhead connector assembly, plus two violet sender flying leads with inline 150-series connector bodies and a terminal pick tool for transferring your factory sender terminals. |
| 1 | ITWH-058 | In-tank harness, 12", with the Sumitomo/Tyco-style pump connector. |
Kits are bagged from individually stocked components. The sender connector bodies are supplied loose with the pick tool so you can transfer your factory sender terminals without opening the sealed bulkhead connector.
Pump Compatibility
This is the W (Tyco/Sumitomo connector) wiring kit. It fits pumps that use the OE-style Tyco/Sumitomo pump connector, including:
- Racetronix RXP in-tank pumps
- Walbro 255 L/hr pumps
- Walbro 350 L/hr pumps
Running a Hellcat, Walbro 525 or Walbro 450 pump? Those use a different pump connector — see the FPWK-028D kit instead.
Not for brushless pumps. Brushless pumps require a dedicated three-phase controller and sensor wiring (four conductors just for the pump) and are not compatible with this harness.
Engineering Specifications
- 10 AWG copper on the full power and ground path, battery to pump.
- 630-series sealed fuse holder with an ATC blade fuse — 25 A, sized for the 255/350-class pumps this kit serves.
- Sealed weatherproof relay with a PCM-safe pull-to-ground trigger.
- Isolated sender reference ground — the fuel-level circuit never shares a return with pump ground, so the gauge stays accurate.
- No solder joints — ultrasonically welded splices and sealed connectors throughout for underhood and in-tank durability.
Installation Notes
The ITWH-058 plugs directly onto your pump. If your pump arrived with its own in-tank pigtail, set that aside and use the supplied ITWH-058 in its place so the sender ground stays isolated.
You transfer the two factory fuel-level sender terminals into the supplied inline connector bodies — no crimping and no need to open the sealed bulkhead connector. The sender is a two-wire variable resistor with no polarity, so either supplied lead can go to either sender wire.
Pump ground bonds at the brass through-hat stud on its own dedicated conductor; the stud mounting hardware is supplied. Tank removal, hanger service, fuel-pressure relief and the pump prime cycle are vehicle-service steps — follow the factory service manual or a Chilton/Haynes guide for your car.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this include a fuel pump?
No. This is a wiring kit for a pump you already have. For a complete kit with the pump included, see RFPK-028.
Does this fit a 1999 or newer F-body?
No. It's specific to the 1998 model-year bulkhead and hanger. The 1999–2002 cars use a different fuel system.
Which pump do I have — is this the right kit?
This kit fits the Tyco/Sumitomo-connector pumps (Racetronix RXP, Walbro 255, Walbro 350). If you're running a Hellcat, Walbro 525 or 450, use the FPWK-028D instead.
Will this work with a brushless pump?
No. Brushless pumps need a three-phase controller and sensor wiring — four conductors just for the pump. This harness is for standard brushed pumps only.
My fuel gauge went erratic after a past pump swap. Will this help?
Yes. The usual cause is the sender ground being tied to pump ground. This kit keeps the sender reference ground isolated end to end, which is how the factory circuit avoids that error.
